In Pursuit of Happiness

I now strongly believe happiness is a destination and not a journey. It is because I still need to do more in order to be happy. I need to unlearn the things that could hinder me into finding happiness' way. I need to discover the hidden capacities of he human spirit in order to be happy.
Presently, I am not in the state of happiness because I I am burdened with the desire of discovering myself, of uncovering what is it I could do and to doing the things that could make me feel fulfilled.
I pray someday soon I will stand on top of the happiness mountain and declare to everyone, 'Happiness at last!'

What Is Happiness?

One morning I just woke up and realized I've been writing about happiness for many a year now, yet what really is happiness? I have not defined it yet. Thesaurus dictionary says it is an adjective which means being delighted; satisfied. Dictionary.com says it is delighted, pleased, glad, over a particular thing.
There is this post in howstuffworks.com describing 'what is happiness.' It says happiness is subjective, meaning it means different things to different people. To behaviorists, happiness is a cocktail of emotions we experience when we do something good or positive. To neurologists, happiness is a myriad of hormones released to the brain as a reward that prolongs survival. To religious orders, happiness is the presence of God.
Philosophers debated that happiness is a battle between two views: hedonia and eudaimonia. Hedonists believed that happiness is the polar opposite of suffering; the presence of happiness indicates the absence of pain. As a result they believed that the purpose of happiness is to maximize pleasure, minimize misery. However, this view lead on to the wrong notion of going after pleasure to its excessiveness, as in indulging too much alcohol or accumulating too much wealth.
On the other side of the debate, eudaimonia is a combination of two Greek words "good" and "spirit" to describe the ideology. It views happiness as a pursuit to become a better person.
Eudaimonists challenged themselves intellectually, or engaged in activities that make them spiritually richer people.
The distinction between the two comes down whether happiness is a destination (the hedonic view) or a journey (the eudaimonic view). Put another way, hedonism derives that happiness is expressed externally, while eudaimonism expresses happiness internally.
At a glance, the nobler form of happiness is expressed in the eudaimonic philosophy: which includes kindness and generosity towards others. However, it's in the hedonistic philosophy that one aspires for wealth wherein when one has it, it is much easier to be generous to others.
Whatever ones preference is, happiness depends upon the values one person has and in the ability he put into action those values. Albert Camus says, "But what is happiness except the harmony between a man and the life he leads?"
This all explains why sometimes I view happiness as a journey, and at times I view it as a destination. Whichever which I'll always aspire to be happy one day at a time.

Just Be Happy

It's raining outside. The sun has not come out since this morning. There is tropical depression, the TV news says. Nevertheless, I'm still happy. I am because I choose to be. I am happy because I am alive. I am happy because I hear the gentle falling of the rain. I am happy because I know how does it feel to walk in the rain. I am happy because God gives rain. Hope you are to..

Happiness Quote 1

Happiness is a daily choice. The moment we wake up, we are faced with that choice. It's either to become happy or not. How to become happy? No one could give us the ultimate answer, because it depends on how we see it and how we live it. The only thing that we are so sure of, are the things that could not make us happy. We live each day of our life by avoiding the things that could not make us happy. It's much easier that way. And we live each day of our lives pursuing the things that we believe could make us happy. On my take, I could become happy just by gazing at the tranquil sea. Yeah, the choice is ours. And I choose to become happy as much as I can on my journey daily.

Choose The Best

Choose the best that could lead you to your happiness. Of course, not the conventional 'happiness' like uploading selfie photos in Facebook; but the true 'happiness' where your soul is being expressed. Happiness resides in the deepest recesses of your being. It would be out not by adding anything into you, but by subtracting something in you that blocks its way. Find out what are those blocks, then choose the best thing to do.

Reader's Digest's 20 Simple Ways to Get Happy

I come across these simple ways to get happy from Reader's Digest. I know it's worth sharing. If you want to read the original post here's the link.

Happiness is ephemeral, subject to the vagaries of everything from the weather to the size of your bank account.
We’re not suggesting that you can reach a permanent state called “happiness” and remain there. But there are many ways to swerve off the path of anxiety, anger, frustration, and sadness into a state of happiness once or even several times throughout the day. Here are 20 ideas to get you started. Choose the ones that work for you. If tuning out the news or making lists will serve only to stress you further, try another approach.

1. Practice mindfulness. Be in the moment. Instead of worrying about your checkup tomorrow while you have dinner with your family, focus on the here and now — the food, the company, the conversation.

2. Laugh out loud. Just anticipating a happy, funny event can raise levels of endorphins and other pleasure-inducing hormones and lower production of stress hormones. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, tested 16 men who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it. They started experiencing biological changes right away. When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones dropped significantly, while their endorphin levels rose 27 percent and their growth hormone levels (indicating benefit to the immune system) rose 87 percent.

3. Go to sleep. We have become a nation of sleep-deprived citizens. Taking a daily nap or getting into bed at 8 p.m. one night with a good book — and turning the light out an hour later — can do more for your mood and outlook on life than any number of bubble baths or massages.

4. Hum along. Music soothes more than the savage beast. Studies find music activates parts of the brain that produce happiness — the same parts activated by food or sex. It’s also relaxing. In one study older adults who listened to their choice of music during outpatient eye surgery had significantly lower heart rates, blood pressure, and cardiac workload (that is, their heart didn’t have to work as hard) as those who had silent surgery.

5. Declutter. It’s nearly impossible to meditate, breathe deeply, or simply relax when every surface is covered with papers and bills and magazines, your cabinets bulge, and you haven’t balanced your checkbook in six months. Plus, the repetitive nature of certain cleaning tasks — such as sweeping, wiping, and scrubbing — can be meditative in and of itself if you focus on what you’re doing.

6. Just say no. Eliminate activities that aren’t necessary and that you don’t enjoy. If there are enough people already to handle the church bazaar and you’re feeling stressed by the thought of running the committee for yet another year, step down and let someone else handle things.

7. Make a list. There’s nothing like writing down your tasks to help you organize your thoughts and calm your anxiety. Checking off each item provides a great sense of fulfillment.

8. Do one thing at a time. Edward Suarez, Ph.D., associate professor of medical psychology at Duke, found that people who multitask are more likely to have high blood pressure. Take that finding to heart. Instead of talking on the phone while you fold laundry or clean the kitchen, sit down in a comfortable chair and turn your entire attention over to the conversation. Instead of checking e-mail as you work on other projects, turn off your e-mail function until you finish the report you’re writing. This is similar to the concept of mindfulness.

9. Garden. Not only will the fresh air and exercise provide their own stress reduction and feeling of well-being, but the sense of accomplishment that comes from clearing a weedy patch, watching seeds turn into flowers, or pruning out dead wood will last for hours, if not days.

10. Tune out the news. For one week go without reading the newspaper, watching the news, or scanning the headlines online. Instead, take a vacation from the misery we’re exposed to every day via the media and use that time for a walk, a meditation session, or to write in your journal.

11. Take a dog for a walk. There are numerous studies that attest to the stress-relieving benefits of pets. In one analysis researchers evaluated the heart health of 240 couples, half of whom owned a pet. Those couples with pets had significantly lower heart rates and blood pressure levels when exposed to stressors than the couples who did not have pets. In fact, the pets worked even better at buffering stress than the spouses did.

12. Scent the air. Research finds that the benefits of aromatherapy in relieving stress are real. In one study people exposed to rosemary had lower anxiety levels, increased alertness, and performed math computations faster. Adults exposed to lavender showed an increase in the type of brain waves that suggest increased relaxation. Today you have a variety of room-scenting methods, from plug-in air fresheners to essential oil diffusers, potpourri, and scented candles.

13. Ignore the stock market. Simply getting your quarterly 401(k) statement can be enough to send your blood pressure skyrocketing. In fact, Chinese researchers found a direct link between the daily performance of the stock market and the mental health of those who closely followed it. Astute investors know that time heals most financial wounds, so give your investments time — and give yourself a break.

14. Visit a quiet place. Libraries, museums, gardens, and places of worship provide islands of peace and calm in today’s frantic world. Find a quiet place near your house and make it your secret getaway.

15. Volunteer. Helping others enables you to put your own problems into perspective and also provides social interaction. While happy people are more likely to help others, helping others increases your happiness. One study found that volunteer work enhanced all six aspects of well-being: happiness, life satisfaction, self-esteem, sense of control over life, physical health, and depression.

16. Spend time alone. Although relationships are one of the best antidotes to stress, sometimes you need time alone to recharge and reflect. Take yourself out to lunch or to a movie, or simply spend an afternoon reading, browsing in a bookstore, or antiquing.

17. Walk mindfully. You probably already know that exercise is better than tranquilizers for relieving anxiety and stress. But what you do with your mind while you’re walking can make your walk even more beneficial. In a study called the Ruth Stricker Mind/Body Study, researchers divided 135 people into five groups of walkers for 16 weeks. Group one walked briskly, group two at a slow pace, and group three at a slow pace while practicing “mindfulness,” a mental technique to bring about the relaxation response, a physiological response in which the heart rate slows and blood pressure drops. This group was asked to pay attention to their footsteps, counting one, two, one, two, and to visualize the numbers in their mind. Group four practiced a form of tai chi, and group five served as the control, changing nothing about their lives. The group practicing mindfulness showed significant declines in anxiety and had fewer negative and more positive feelings about themselves. Overall they experienced the same stress-reducing effects of the brisk walkers. Better yet, the effects were evident immediately.

18. Give priority to close relationships. One study of more than 1,300 men and women of various ages found that those who had a lot of supportive friends were much more likely to have healthier blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar metabolism, and stress hormone levels than those with two or fewer close friends. Women, and to a lesser extent men, also seemed to benefit from good relationships with their parents and spouses. Studies also find that people who feel lonely, depressed, and isolated are three to five times more likely to get sick and die prematurely than those who have feelings of love, connection, and community.

19. Take care of the soul. In study after study, actively religious people are happier and cope better with crises, according to David Myers, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. For many people faith provides a support community, a sense of life’s meaning, feelings of ultimate acceptance, a reason to focus beyond yourself, and a timeless perspective on life’s woes. Even if you’re not religious, a strong spirituality may offer similar benefits.
20. Count your blessings. People who pause each day to reflect on some positive aspect of their lives (their health, friends, family, freedom, education, etc.) experience a heightened sense of well-being.

Happiness

There comes a time when happiness seems a bubble in the air. No matter where you look, outside, inside it's nowhere to be found. The moment it puffs nothing is left.

Yet happiness, I believe, is always there in our hearts carved in our deepest recesses by our God Almighty. We need only to let go of the things that are said to be symbols of happiness. Then we know what happiness really is.

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Forty-Eighth Lesson

Lesson Number Forty-Eight:  If you don't ask, you don't get.

Jesus said, "...seek and ye shall find, knock and the door will be opened, ask and it shall be given to you.." How could  God know what it is we really want and need when even we, ourselves, could not specifically point out whatever it is we are asking?

We all have needs and wants. God is very much wiling to give it to us from His bounty. All we need is just ask. Even parents struggle to know what it is their crying babies want because of the inability of the baby to utter what is it they want. How could then our Heavenly Father not give us what we so ardently want?

If we then know what it is we want, it is by experience that I could say, we need first to pray to God if what we want is also His will for us before setting out on asking and getting what we want because not all that we want is in accordance with God's will for us. In order for things to flow smoothly and blissfully, it is really a must to pray. And when God answers our prayer, He then would give us what we ask with much blessings and in abundance.

Start asking and get happy!!!

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Forty-Fifth Lesson

Lesson Number Forty-Five: The best is yet to come.

This is my prayer for today and for all the days that come in my life. I am not contented with the mediocrity of my present because it is the result of my mediocre thinking and mediocre prayers of the days past. Now that I am fully convinced of the greatness of God, and that I could make happen God's greatness in my life I now pray and believe that the best is yet to come in my life.
Try believe and thinking for yourself this way and you'll know the amount of happiness you will feel just by the thought of the best that is coming your way. It's so good. It's so nice. It's so beautiful. Try it. You will lose nothing.

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Forty-Sixth Lesson

Lesson Number Forty-Six: No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

There is no one who can best carry our wounded or battered selves than us. If, for example the pain is too strong and heavy enough to carry, then we just have to give ourselves time to cry and withdraw from the world for a while. However, to rehabilitate ourselves for long is no longer healthy. There are responsibilities we have to carry and work need to be done, or even people to care for. So, no matter what, we just have to get up, dress up and show up. The pain will subside in its due time if we just allow it. Nature has designed it to be. We just have to be strong, for there is that hidden strength within us ready to be realized. Moreover, God is always there for us.  Who could be against us?

Lesson Number Forty-Four: Envy is a waste of time.  You already have all you need.

I have a difficulty in relating to this because honestly, I do not have everything that other people have, and not all people have what I have, physically and materially speaking. But as to God my savior, the free air that I so infinitely breathe, the nature that I so love to see and be with, we, all of us have this. Envy has no power over these things.

However, envy is not that easy to let down. That is why, in the Ten Commandments of the Christian faith set by God, it is clearly stated to.... "not covet thy neighbor's wife and thy neighbor's goods." It is true that we also love to possess what our neighbor's possess. Instead of envying, God give us the power to appreciate and be happy for our neighbors. Most especially, He give us also the capacity to posses whatever it is we desire as long as it is in accordance with His divine will for us. So instead of focusing on envy, let us focus on the fulfillment of our dreams, wishes and aspirations because they are what make us whole and the best way to the fulfillment of our missions in life.

Stop envying and start getting happy!

Regina Brett's fifty Life Lessons: The Forty-Third Lesson

Lesson Number Forty-Three: All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.

God is love. God is the beginning, God is the end. As simple as that. Yet it pains my heart that much to see how little we love and how big we hate. We are now in the new generation. Could we all start letting go of the hatred that had been handed down from our ancestors of the past and start living a life of pure happiness and bliss through love?

We have so many songs about love; so many poems about love; so many stories about love... Yet, why are we still miserable and are living a life short of it? If there is that great love in our hearts, there would be no more hatred, no more wars, no more unhappiness, no more sadness...

I love so much the line of this song that goes, ..."I found the greatest love of all inside of me".... Perhaps this is what we lack: the love inside of us; the love we have for ourselves. Let us start loving ourselves, for how can we love others if we do not have that love for ourselves? And let us love truly because in the end this is all that matters...

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Forty-Second Lesson

Lesson Number Forty-Two: Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

... like hatred, jealousy, pride, anger, resentment, and anything that makes us unhappy. There are a lot of unhappy people in this grand universe because of these negative emotions. It is time to let go of them now and enjoy a life filled with beauty, happiness and joy.

There are 3 ways to get rid of anything unhelpful in our life.

1. Get rid of garbage. ( Surroundings ) Any garbage. All garbage from the kitchen, from inside the house, or even those inside the closet. Yes, those unused clothing that sit in your closet for years. Give them away. Donate them. You not only get rid of them, but would make other people happy too. Let go of those blessings so that there would be enough space to receive another blessing again.

2. Get rid of the excess fat. ( Physical ) Are there any? We all know that excess fat is not good for our health. Not only excess fat, but excess sugar, excess blood pressure and all other excesses as well. Go outside, get some exercise, eat right, live right. This is the best regimen for a healthier and longer life.

3. Get rid of the negatives. ( Mental ) Yes, negative thoughts, negative feelings and negative finances. We all know that all of these negative feelings and emotions can drain our energies; so why harbor them inside when they are not useful and beautiful? We only need to pray harder and be determined to have God in our life in order to get rid of these. As to negative finances, when everything is easier to acquire nowadays, including debt, it is best to shy away from it especially when we have not the additional income to augment our finances. All we need is discipline. It is not easier said than done because to live happily is our aim, and we all long for that.

There we have it. Hope we all learn from it that we may one day wake up to a useful, beautiful and joyful life.

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Forty-First Lesson

Lesson Number Forty-One: Don't audit life.  Show up and make the most of it now.

Yeah, this is where I almost always fall. Most of the time I could be an auditor or mathematician who is always counting on what life had been offering me and hadn't. I always ask why it offers much to others and to me less. Why and so many whys. Instead of being grateful, I was spiteful. Anyway, Regina Brett suggest to show up and make the most of life. Honestly, I have so much difficulty in showing up. I still have my issues, that's why. Painful or not, the reality is there could be no perfect situation. Showing up and making the most of life is much, much easier said than done. Regina Brett suggests this because she might have done her part all too well. But for me, oh God, help me. Showing up is not my cup of tea. But it is the only way to be grateful with life and to stop auditing life.

I am still alive, which means I have to do my part if I were to make the most of life. And this lesson? I am still on my way of passing the test.

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Fortieth Lesson

Lesson Number Forty: If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.

There is no life that is hassle free and problems free. The reason why we strive so hard in life is because we have problems to solve and overcome. If we have no problems, we would never know the joy of fulfillment. Everything would just go so easily. And the worst of all, we would never know the value of things if we do not put all our efforts, heart and soul in them.

If you think you are doomed or uncared for by God because your problems seem limitless and insurmountable, friend you must rejoice, for it is in your problems that you must hold on to God the most.  It is the time when you feel so near to God, if you just would be humble enough to bring those problems to God. And the good thing is God always cares...

Most especially, when you feel so overwhelmed by your problems, slow down, look at others and you'll know how heavy their burdens are too. It may not be obvious for others because they might have the ability to carry their problems with strength and determination, but for some who are weaker, they ended up with bullet in their heads. Worst, they include others in their suicide. We could only pray for their souls.

So, if you are suffering now of whatever problems there is in your life just be calm and know that there is God. Yes, He cares and He loves you. Go to Him, He is waiting.

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Twenty-Fifth Lesson

Lesson Number Twenty-Five: No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

Why are you here in this planet?.....
The answers could be varied, but there is one that stands out -- to be happy.

What are the ways to becoming happy?

The answers could be varied too; depending on the mood, lifestyle, environment, experiences, status, age, influences and interests of the person.

As for me, there is no sure way as to what makes us happy. Because some things can make me happy while to others it could not -- just like sitting in front of the monitor looking outside at the green leaves dancing gracefully with each drop of the rain. Oh, it is so beautiful. And it makes me happy by just watching at the dance of the leaves and the raindrops.

It is where I am happiest the most --when I am with nature. Of course, my family makes me happy; but realistically, sometimes they don't.  Because I just choose to. For I know I am in charge of my own happiness and not anybody else. Sometimes I just allow my family to make me unhappy.
We all want and strive to be happy. I know that. What is the purpose of all our undertakings under the sun if not to be happy in the end. Only that we attach our happiness to the things that we believe could make us happy. This is where the difference lies. This is the reason why misery still exists in our helpless world despite the fact that we all want to be happy.

Sometimes too, we allow circumstances to make us happy. We want these and that to make us happy. In short, we only wait for anything that comes and make us happy. Oh, come on. Let us all wake up to the very fact that we are in charge of our happiness. To be truly happy is not somebody else responsibility. It is ours. Let us allow other people to be busy making themselves happy, while we are also busy making ourselves happy. Let us take that yoke off our neighbor's shoulders. We must carry our own yoke of making ourselves happy because it is our responsibility.

This is what we should always remember: No one is in charge of our happiness, except us! It is our responsibility. It is our mission. If we are wise enough to follow this lesson, in our small way, we are slowly making a big difference in this beautiful planet of ours. Don't wait. Start now!

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Twenty-Third Lesson

Lesson Number Twenty-Three: Be eccentric now.  Don't wait for old age to wear purple.

Whatever it is we want to do today, whether it be wearing purple, maroon or flowery printed dresses, let's wear it now. In the old times, those who used to wear purple dresses are the older ladies. Now time has changed. Why wait for us growing old when we can do it now?

Our time is the time of the 'eccentrics'. Eccentric personality is already accepted now. Gone are the days of the conventional. Gone are the days of the self-righteous, older people. As long as what we are doing can make us happy, and no one is hurt by our achieving happiness and fulfillment, then go let us be happy and to things that can make us much happier.

Now is the time to be free. So, why not celebrate this freedom. Let us set aside the thought of what others might think of our actions because it is not other people's thoughts that can make us happy. If we are truly happy, other people will feel that and they too, can benefit from our happiness. For we are all connected. No one can say no to happiness. Happiness is a light. When we have the light on our faces, no one is able to refrain away from it. This light inside us is contagious. When others see it, they are able to light the candles inside their souls and start passing that light to others.

Why wait? Do it now. Start passing the light. Wear purple and be happy.

Get happy!

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Twenty-First Lesson

Lesson Number Twenty-One: Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie.  Don't save it for a special occasion.  Today is special.

'Today is special'. Everyday is special.

When we were young back then, our mother used to set aside expensive plates, glasses and kitchen utensils for special occasions. We couldn't help but just stare at those nice things inside the cabinet wondering when would we be able to use those things. How wonderful would it be to eat on such fancy plates and drink in that fancy glasses. The most frustrating thing was that, we never get to use them. Because when those special occasions came, it were the guests who were allowed to use those things and not us. Till now, I'm still wondering how would those fancy utensils feel in my dainty hands.

Now that I have my own family and live in my own home, I also have those 'special things' for 'special occasions'. The only difference I have with my mother is that, from time to time I would allow my family to use those special stuffs in our dinner table. I don't care if my kids would break one or two. I don't care if my husband would break one too. I don't care if I would break some too. What matters much is that, my family could use my special stuffs because they are also special. We are special. And everyday is special.

In my home, nothing is so special as to save it for special occasions. Because I and my husband always see to it that we could get the best even if it could never be the best in the market; as long as it is the best that we could afford. And whatever it is we consider best, we use it in our home.
It always boosts our happiness and contentment when we know we are using what we consider special. So go on, use that special stuff and feel special everyday.

Get happy!

Regina Brett's Fifty Life Lessons: The Sixth Lesson

Lesson Number Six: You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

This is a lesson I have first learned when I get married. I used to believe I have to win every argument because I assumed I was always right. Whatever I assumed right should always be right. Whenever someone challenges my beliefs and disposition I always shun away from that person. Because I was imprisoned with the belief that if I and the other person do not agree on something, we better separate ways. It was either you could be my friend, or could be my foe.

I grew up believing peaceful negotiations could never be attained. Thus, some of my decisions and choices in life were based on these false beliefs. And it had not done me any good. All because I had so many unlikely exits from people's lives and situations I never had the humility to accept defeat. I am carrying the guilt with me over friendships and relationships that I never had peaceful goodbyes just because of foolish pride. And the guilt was not worth it. It was like trading my happiness of today with the unhappiness of yesterday. This is what I have learned and still working on in my life--that winning in every argument, no matter how right I am, is not a right solution to any argument. Other person's feelings and disposition matters too. It pays much to not always be right and still loving, than to to be always right and unloving.

Now that I am married, I got beautiful a glimpse of how it is really to love a human being--I don't have to win every argument. Not because the other person is right, but because I love the person so as to let him win the argument and avoid further complications the argument could bring.
